According to the Taiwanese technology new site, DigiTimes which frequently relays Apple rumors, Apple is “preparing materials” to start production of the new iPad 3 which is due to be announced in September and to be released sometime in October. The new tablet ipad is expected to be thinner and lighter than the iPad 2 with a better panel resolution of 250dpi.
Taiwanese component makers for the new iPad are expected to include Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) for device assembly, TPK Holding and Wintek for touch panel modules, Largan Precision for of webcams, Simplo Technologies and Dynapack International Technology for battery manufacturing, and Catcher in charge of chassis.
According to GizmoCrunch, the iPad 3 is likely to feature an AMOLED screen with a 3D display and a quad-core Apple A6 processor.
The iPad 3 is expected to begin production in “small volumes” in August to pick up in September and October in time for release, added DigiTimes.
Many technology sites are hesitant to lend too much credibility to the DigiTimes iPad 3 rumors. Cnet’s Josh Lowensohn writes, “Apple introducing a third iPad model within eight months of debuting the last version would be highly unusual.”
On her end, PCmag’s Leslie Horn writes, “While it’s been widely rumored that Apple will drop the iPhone 5 this fall, there have been conflicting rumors about the timeline of the launch of the iPad 3. If Apple’s habit of sticking to an annual product update cycle is any indication, the third-generation tablet pc won’t launch until next spring. But considering Apple has broken that custom with the iPhone, they may do the same for the next iPad.”
DigiTimes also states that the next generation iPhone will be released around the same time as the iPad 3, with Third Generation iPad Rumored Release an estimated shipment supply of 6 to 7 million units in the third quarter. In 2011 Apple is expected to ship over 85 million iPhones which includes the iPhone 4.
