Can a modern tablet like the iPad, which may only go one year between product refreshes, provide a student with fully functional computer experience for the school year? How about four school years?

"I think tablets are very useful, but still have a long way to go in terms of replacing the laptop and not just being an intermediary between the cell phone and the laptop," says Carson Keller, a 20-year-old International Business major at Northeastern University. "I can do what I need on both my cell phone and my laptop at this point."

Tablet Support Lacking
As the new kid on the block, the tablet doesn't support some of the necessary applications to make it the tool of choice for students. Many classes require programs that might not work as efficiently on a tablet as on a standard notebook. Imagine a computer science major trying to bang out code for class on an underpowered iPad. Microsoft Office support on tablets is also limited to apps, which do not offer the robust features of the notebook/desktop version or its free alternatives. In addition, Media arts students will find the current crop of tablets lack a truly robust video editing suite, despite some relatively basic programs like iMovie for iOS.

This isn't to suggest that tablets do not have a place in the classroom. The students we spoke with stressed that they appreciate the intimacy the portable device brings to their education.

"I had one teacher who would walk around the classroom with his iPad as he presented a PowerPoint to the class," says 20-year-old Sarah Salzman, a Political Science and Economics major at Northeastern. "He was a much more friendly and outgoing teacher because he was always talking to you. It makes a huge difference when a teacher is looking at you versus when he is sitting behind a computer, clicking at slides and talking."

While schools like The University of Southern Mississippi and Seton Hall University have begun adopting tablets into their programs, many colleges still have logistical hurdles to clear before becoming tablet friendly. Many classes now have an online component for assignments, discussions, and communications. How many of those sites are optimized for mobile browsers and touch? How many of those sites feature Flash components the iPad cannot display?

 "You definitely need a more tablet-friendly environment," says Tom Sheehan, a 20-year-old MIS (Management Information System) Business major at Northeastern. "Now that everything is set up for the computer and designed towards the operating systems that computers run, tablets are not as efficient."

So is it just a matter of time before the tablet device becomes the new laptop? That's what most students seem to think. According to them, we are still in the early years of development for the gadget and though the tablet's reputation as a functional and efficient device has not yet caught up to its convenient status, the two will find a balance in the years to come.

"Tablets in about 10 years, everyone will have one," says Sheehan. "There will be no more laptops, everybody will have tablets, but right now, they just are not ready yet."

A recent survey of 448 businesses by Model Metrics found that 22% of companies have begun formal deployment of tablets, and 78% plan to by 2013. Seventy-two percent claimed to already have tablets in use, just not formally integrated. The Apple iPad is by far the most popular device, with 83% of companies choosing Apple’s tablet over the competition.

There is no question the iPad is the most popular tablet with business users as well as consumers. Another study by Good Technology, which manages mobile devices for 49 of the Fortune 100 and 182 of the Fortune 500, found that enterprises activated more iPads than Android smartphones in Q2 2011.

Those companies are making a mistake, one fueled by the desire for the coolest gadget with the slickest design. In fact, many decision makers readily admit it. Thirty-five percent cited the iPad’s “cool” factor as the reason they chose Apple’s tablet in the Model Metrics survey. 

Too Cool for Business

Really? Cool factor? How do you build a business case around that? Will the cool factor make an employee more productive? Will the cool factor protect the iPad from the bumps and bruises of business travel?

Of course not. The Apple iPad lacks any ports or inputs useful to a business user and requires expensive accessories to perform basic computer tasks like transferring files from a thumb drive. Accessory external keyboards, a necessity for any serious user, also add to the cost, as do protective cases.

Businesses serious about tablet deployment should ask, “What device makes the most sense for my business?” Out of the box, there is no question the Toshiba Thrive trumps the iPad in usability and durability.

And enterprises with a constant eye on the bottom line won’t be keen on replacing a fleet of $500 tablets, or sending them out for expensive repairs every few years, especially considering a tablet offering a less expensive alternative is readily available.

App Advantage

To be fair the iPad does have a distinct app advantage over Honeycomb tablets like the Thrive. Both have decent Office and remote desktop apps like LogMeIn Ignition, but the iPad has more than 100,000 total apps compared to approximately 300 designed specifically for Honeycomb.

ThriveBut that advantage will shrink as Android makes gains in the enterprise and developers take notice. To that end, Google has made steady progress in making Android more enterprise friendly. The Honeycomb roll out came with a host of enterprise goodies from Google, including stronger password and disk encryption features.

What won’t change is the iPad. It will never have a USB input and it will never have a replaceable battery. And if that is not enough to convince corporate decision makers, the Thrive is cheaper than the iPad. Right now, the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad costs $499, while a Thrive with similar specs costs $480, and an 8GB model is available for $430.

The Commonwealth Bank today rolled out a suite of new mobile banking applications including NetBank for iPad and Android tablets, and a new CommBank mobile banking app for iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7 smartphone platforms.

Citing a growing demand for mobile banking, the Commonwealth Bank says the apps focus on three key areas: simplicity, security and convenience. It said most of its users use mobile banking to check their balances, pay bills and view recent transactions and that the app caters foremost for these needs.

"The key focus is simplicity, security and convenience, particularly simplicity around a small screen," said Andy Lark, Commonwealth Bank's chief marketing and online officer. "We see mobile devices like phones and tablets as an extension of your wallet, and have focussed on enhancing and optimising this mobile experience."

The new mobile banking apps consist of three core functions. The NetBank service allows customers to check transactions, transfer money and pay bills, while the app also includes the CommSec Property Guide (iPhone only) and a new foreign exchange tool kit. The latter allows users to check foreign exchange rates for 33 currencies, and also has calculators for cash rates, Travel Money Card and international money transfers. The Commonwealth Bank app also shows you the nearest branch and ATM based on your current GPS location, and includes social media integration with the Bank's Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts. The tablet and smartphone apps are similar, through the apps for the iPad and Android tablets are custom designed to take advantage of the extra screen real estate.

Although a specific Commonwealth Bank app has been developed for three mobile software platforms — iOS, Google Android and Windows Phone 7 — the bank was keen to point out it would develop solutions for the mobile space in general, rather than focus on specific devices or operating systems. It claims to be the first Australian bank to have built a web-based Internet banking app optimised for the "tablet experience."

"The NetBank app has been created with HTML 5 so it works on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet for example," said Lark. It's not just about mobile and tablets, it's about a whole digital ecosystem and long term we want to be device agnostic, to move out of the OS war."

Lark also confirmed that the Commonwealth Bank is currently exploring Near Field Communication (NFC) technology as a future mobile payment system.

"As soon as NFC is ready on devices, we are ready," he said. "NFC is just one part of an evolving payment system."

The new Commonwealth Bank apps can be downloaded now from the iOS App Store, the Google Android Market, while the Windows Phone 7 app will be available in the Windows Marketplace from Thursday 14 July. Alternatively, users with a compatible device can access mobile banking by visiting the Netbank Web site.

The Internet changed banking forever. It is impossible to consider banking without the functionality, the ease of use and the availability that Internet banking brought to the majority of people WITH bank accounts. This was a silent revolution and became prevalent in only a few years. During the 1990's banks started offering rudimentary banking services via Internet sites and early in the 2000 decade this feature was being widely used. The volume of transactions and the monetary value grew dramatically to a point where Internet banking is probably the biggest source of electronic banking transactions. (Credit card transactions may still hold the lead, but is loosing the lead fast).

With the deployment of Mobile banking solutions during 2001, many analysts expected mobile banking to end up as another type of Internet banking deployment. Many bankers expected mobile phones to provide just another "channel" to customers to access the Internet Banking portal. As a matter of fact I have heard many an IT architect in large banks talk of the convergence of channels to be supported by only one means of interacting with your bank. This was of course a big misconception, because mobile banking is fundamentally different to Internet banking and because of the following reasons:

1. The banking alert services that grew to be a major driver of mobile banking in many countries cannot be effectively implemented in an Internet banking paradigm. It is just not possible to send SMS confirmations to Internet users.

2. The security implementations possible with mobile banking is much more advanced (especially if the SIM card is utilised). This is because mobile banking security can be based on keys or certificates - the holy grail of electronic banking very difficult to implement with Internet Banking. The notion of carrying your banking keys in a device that you have with you all the time (your mobile phone) is extremely powerful and enable the deployment of new types of banking solutions never before possible.

3. The immediacy of mobile phones and the fact that it can probably be utilised anywhere (very few places do not have mobile phone coverage), allows for new types of solutions. Some of these solutions can be implemented in conjunction with existing banking operations. (E.g. allow clients to change a PIN on the phone after an ATM transaction, allow clients to block a credit card from a phone, enable a client to authorise access to personal information from the phone etc. etc.)

4. The best mobile banking deployments utilise message-based implementations (rather than session-based implementations which is prevalent in Internet banking). This architecture leads to significant differences in what is possible and how service is to be delivered. I will discuss this in more detail later on.

However, the biggest difference is the access that mobile banking have enabled to banking that have never been the case before. Internet banking enabled people to access their banking electronically only if they had been banked before, whereas mobile banking is leading to a revolution where people are being banked who never had a banking relationship in the past. This is largely because of the utility and functionality that is now being made available to people with cell-phones (which is much more than people with access to the Internet)

Four years ago, I wrote a blog arguing why mobile banking is not at all like Internet banking (Read here). Most (if not all) of the arguments are still very much applicable today. The biggest being that through mobile banking it is now possible to reach a large percentage of the world's population that do not have access to banking infrastructure. This in itself is a major revolution.

However, with the massive advances in mobile phone technology and the convergence of smart phones with tablet PC's and desktops, is it still possible to distinguish between mobile banking and online banking? How is it possible to distinguish between an Internet banking session originating from an iPhone browser, a iPad's browser or a MAC? The answer is that it is not possible. It is therefor possible to perform online (read browser-based) banking from a phone. Also, it is quite conceivable that a mobile banking app (written for the iPhone) can now be run on a iPad. Is this mobile banking or tablet banking?

What is needed, possibly, is to redefine online and mobile banking in different terms and utilise new terms to distinguish between the two. I would propose still using online banking, but rather refer to mobile banking as transactional (or message-based) banking. Mobile banking (designed correctly) have utilised the phone characteristics of being able to work with messages better and also support real time push capabilities. This functionality is of course now also available on PC's and can/should be utilised by banks for this form-factor too. Transactional banking would typically focus on payment transactions (bill payments, ad hoc person to person payments, cheque-related payments etc.) whereas, online banking offer much more sophisticated reporting and information representation capabilities.

The most important difference in my mind is recognising the difference in requirements in back office systems. Online banking and Transactional banking have very different scaling challenges and the design for the one (concurrent sessions), would be very different to the other (queue management). Also the security paradigm and risk management and mitigation are also very different.

It is clear that the boundaries between online and transactional banking are busy blurring, but by making this distinction, it is possible to design better banking applications.

Although the app still doesn’t allow you to pay for the items through PayPal, you can still pay for them through the PayPal app.

Well, that sounds pretty impossible!

3-Jailbreaking needed for most of useful apps!

For almost all necessary apps you need to jailbreak the iPad. Shortly learnt that iPad Camera Connection Kit are even capable to recognize USB keyboards, microphones and hubs etc. and can be particularly helpful if you want to wire up more than one device. But interestingly this again is unofficial. That is you need jeailbreaking for it. The question is, when I am already paying as much as 500 USD for the iPad then why is it necessary to get it jailbreaked for some necessary apps?  It’s unofficial and I am an opensource lover, a free user!  Only with jailbreaking you can connect to external hard drive, a very complicated install process and again un-official.

4- Jail breaking for iPad 2 still faces difficulties: No jail breaking means, no flash. I agree that many websites are now employing HTML 5, yet Flash remains king of video formats over the internet. As already indicated in this post, the usage of flash player is extensive. Flash is already available for Android Tablets and Android powered smartphones.

5-Most useful of 650,000 Apps are all paid! Print n Share ($8.99) and Print Magic HD ($4.99), two very popular apps to extend the wireless printing capabilities to other Wi-Fi printers, Premium Documents To Go  (16.99 USD), DataViz. QuickOffice ($14.99), Air Sharing HD ($9.99) etc and the list is ongoing! Mobile Me too isn’t free!

6- To utilize iPad to its full potentials I have to make extra purchases, such as the HDMI output requires an extra adapter.

7- I don’t need FaceTime! I certainly don’t need FaceTime when I already have Skype. Why is there all the hoopla for FaceTime when already millions of people are doing video chat on Skype? No FaceTime on 3G networks

8- Okay if its portable then is 10 hours battery enough?

9- Camera but no Camera- The cameras are of poor quality: When I viewed the gallery of images taken by the rear camera of iPad (forget the front0facing camera its already VGA quality!) I was disappointed! The camera is of certainly poor quality. That means iPad 2 is not the replacement for your digital camera too! It has reportedly done fair job to FaceTime, but again, I don’t need it! Today smartphones come with way better cameras. So why not have them?

10- Mouse integration almost impossible! Again to integrate mouse, you need the iPad to be jailbreaked.

11- No 4G connectivity: Motorola Xoom promises free upgrade to 4G

12- No SD Card slot: An SD card slot is so essential for extensible memory. No SD card slot means more usage of built-in memory. This in turn implies that even 32 Gb memory is short, if you use the iPad for storing videos, movies and digital images.

13- NO USB slot: Why why why? I so need this feature to be added.

14- Price! Well probably the biggest point for me is the price. I would certainly want to get a better smartphone or add in more money (that I already need to extend the potentials of ipad) and get a latest laptop.

15- No Retina display! Well as it was hyped about iPad 2 that it will include retina display, it does not include one. Nonetheless, retina display is a battery burden. And I feel that compromising on battery is not an intelligent move, but one can do without Retina.

In short, I will still wait for iPad 3, when they would double the resolution, and have he SD-Card slot. Moreover, for me, ipad today is more of a fashion than a reliable computing device. I think then, iPad will definitely be a good buy!

Apple iPad 2: Who should buy and who should pass

Takeaway: A lot of people are attracted to the Apple iPad 2, but not all them should get it. Here’s a look at the top candidates for the iPad 2, as well as those who should stick with iPad 1 or get a different device.

Nobody in the technology business does a better job than Apple of convincing people that they need to buy the next shiny new thing. However, despite the product magnetism of Steve Jobs and company, not everyone who thinks they need or want the new iPad 2 should actually buy it.

In order to help some of those folks save some money and to help others decide whether or not they are a good candidate for iPad 2, I’ve put together a quick first take on the iPad 2 question.

Who should buy?

    * Those who’ve waited - People who have already decided that the iPad is a good fit for their light computing and media consumption needs but have so far held out from buying the original iPad or any of the competing tablets are now rewarded for their patience. The iPad 2 maintains the same great catalog of apps and the same long battery life while doubling the performance, adding video calls, and slimming down the form factor — all while maintaining the same price tag as the original. If you’ve held out so far, you now get a lot more tablet for your money.

    * Video callers - If you’re already an iPad owner and the Apple tablet has become an indispensable device that you already use on a daily basis, then there’s one big reason to upgrade: Video calling. Over the past year I’ve heard many iPad users complain that the biggest thing missing from the iPad was the ability to do video calls, using Skype or Apple’s FaceTime. These users have viewed the iPad, with its “lean-back” user experience, as an ideal device for making video calls to long distance family and friends, calling home during business trips, or doing one-on-one video conferencing for business. In my opinion, the iPad 2’s cameras are all about video calls. Apple certainly didn’t design this to be a device for taking high quality still photos. The front-facing camera is for face-to-face calling and the back camera is primarily for showing your video callers what you’re looking at.

    * Mobile multimedia creators - With the upgrade to a dual core processor and the addition of Apple multimedia apps iMovie and GarageBand for the iPad 2, the Apple tablet is expanding beyond being primarily a consumption device to becoming more of a creation device — at least in the specialized area of multimedia creation (audio, video, podcasts, etc.). For those that who want to test the iPad as a mobile creation device that’s more accessible to more content creators than a traditional PC (because of multitouch), then the iPad 2 is a worthy purchase or upgrade.

Who should pass?

    * Fans of iPad 1.0 - The worst reason for upgrading — and I’ve heard this a lot more than expected — is “I really like the original iPad so I’m going to get the new one.” If you’re not going to do much video calling and you’re not going to experiment with the iPad for creating videos and podcasts, then there’s really not much reason to upgrade from iPad 1 to iPad 2. You don’t really need the dual core if you’re not doing all the video calling and multimedia creation, and the slightly thinner/lighter form factor of the iPad 2 is nice but far from essential. The original iPad is still a great device and holding on to it for another year until the iPad 3 and the next generation of competitor tablets arrives could be a very wise choice.

    * Heavy readers - If one of the main reasons that you want an iPad is to use it as an e-reader then I wouldn’t recommend the iPad 2. For hard-core readers who read 2+ hours at a time, who read mostly books, or who spend a lot of time reading outside in full sunlight, then I’d recommend an Amazon Kindle instead. If you’re an omnivorous reader who wants a tablet primarily to read Web pages, magazine articles, non-fiction books with lots of maps and graphics, and PDF documents, then I’d simply recommend picking up an iPad 1, which lots of upgraders are currently unloading for as low as $300.

    * Supporters of open standards - Like the iPod before it, the iPad has appealed to a much wider audience than just traditional Mac and Apple fans. However, the thing to keep in mind before buying the iPad — especially if it’s your first Apple device — is that it will start to insidiously rope you into the Apple ecosystem. Sure, you can get content from outside the Apple ecosystem and use it on your iPad, using Amazon music and videos or Netflix or Barnes & Noble Nook, for example, but you’ll quickly find that it’s easier to just use the Apple ecosystem to buy content. Before you know it, you’ll have a small library of content with DRM that only works in iTunes and on Apple devices (this isn’t the case with music any more, but it is still the case with movies and TV shows). So, next time you upgrade you’ll be more likely to buy another Apple product so that you don’t orphan a bunch of your content. If you’re a supporter of open standards and use a lot of different platforms (e.g. Windows, Linux, Android, Xbox 360, etc.), then you’ll have a hard time wrestling with the iPad to make it work with all of your content and open file formats, and you’ll especially have a hard time getting content from the iPad to play nice with other platforms. You’re probably better off waiting for a really good Android tablet to emerge.
